FAQ – Legal Requirements & Documents for a Zanzibar Wedding
Can we have a symbolic ceremony instead of a legal one?
Yes. Many couples choose a symbolic ceremony on the beach and complete their legal marriage in their home country. This avoids paperwork and translations.
How many witnesses do we need?
You need two witnesses over the age of 18. If you’re traveling alone, we provide the witnesses for your wedding.
Is our Zanzibar marriage certificate valid internationally?
Yes. Your Zanzibar marriage is legally recognized worldwide as long as your documents were correct and you legalized the marriage certificate after the ceremony (if required by your country).
How do we legalize our Zanzibar marriage certificate at home?
After the wedding, you receive from us an International Marriage Certificate from Zanzibar. legalized by the Tanzanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With these documents you can register it with your local authority (e.g., municipality, embassy, or registrar).
Do we need a translator or can you help with translations?
If your documents are not in English, they must be translated by a certified translator. We can assist in arranging official translations when needed.
Can we get married quickly or on short notice?
Yes, you can also get married on short notice, please note that a $50 late filing fee applies. Alternative, you may opt for a symbolic ceremony.
What if one of us was previously married?
You must provide the original divorce decree or spouse’s death certificate, translated to English and apostilled/legalized.
Can same-sex couples legally marry in Zanzibar?
No. Same-sex marriages are not legally recognized in Zanzibar or mainland Tanzania. Couples may still do a non-legal symbolic ceremony at private venues.
